National Public Health Week

Celebrating Public Health in South Dakota

Join SDPHA as we honor the people, policies, and partnerships that strengthen the health of every South Dakotan.

Ready. Set. Action! is this year’s theme. As we celebrate, take a moment to recognize how public health has improved our daily lives, safeguarded our families, expanded our life spans, and strengthened our communities. This week is also a chance to honor the public health workers who show up for us every day — and to advocate for policies and practices that promote good health for all.

What is National Public Health Week?

National Public Health Week (NPHW) is a nationwide celebration led by the American Public Health Association to recognize the people, systems, and policies that protect and improve the health of our communities. Each year, organizations across the country highlight the essential role public health plays in helping individuals and families live longer, healthier lives.

Why It Matters in South Dakota

For SDPHA, NPHW is an opportunity to elevate the unique strengths and challenges of public health in our state. From rural access to care, to maternal and child health, to behavioral health and workforce development, South Dakota’s public health landscape reflects both resilience and ongoing need. NPHW allows us to bring attention to these issues, celebrate progress, and strengthen partnerships that move our state forward.

A Look at the Heart of Public Health

Public health is more than programs and policies — it’s people, stories, and shared purpose. This video from the American Public health Association captures the spirit of what we’re celebrating during National Public Health Week: the commitment to building healthier, safer, and more connected communities.

As you watch, consider how these themes show up in your own work and in the lives of South Dakotans across the state.

How to Be Involved

🏘️ Community Engagement Activities

Public health is local, and NPHW is a chance to highlight the work happening in communities across South Dakota.

Bring NPHW to your community! Activities you can do leading up to and during NPHW include:

  • Including NPHW information at campus and community tabling
  • Help with health education outreach
  • Support student‑led initiatives
  • Engage with partner events across the state

Organizations hosting NPHW activities are invited to submit their events for inclusion on the SDPHA National Public Health Week calendar.
